Going to an aviation college like Institute of Aviation at Parkland College is a great option for many people. Becoming a pilot is a wonderful way to make a career and name for yourself. A pilot is a respected position and can make a good income to support themselves and/or their family. This is why so many people choose to go to flight school. Here are some things that you need to know about aviation school.
1. You Will Have Two Types Of Schooling
Since flying a plane is dangerous and takes a lot of skill and education, you should expect to do two kinds of schooling before you will be able to get your license. For instance, you will first do something called ground school. This is where you will you learn about planes, learn the basics of flying, and learn the theory behind operating a plane. During this time, you will not set foot in an airplane—everything will be theoretical in your learning.
After you have completed enough of ground school to be competent in a plane you will get to do air school. This is when you will get to fly a plane for the first time. Think of it like getting your drivers license again, but more complex. You will need to learn all about the plane, then you will need supervised help to operate the plane, then over time you will be able to do it on your own.
2. You Will Need Many Hours To Get Licensed
After you have completed your schooling, you will need to get many hours flying in order to get licensed. Initially, you can take on odd jobs that help you to get experience. For instance, you might be flying cargo or mail back and forth with a supervisor. Then over time you will get to transition into other positions. Flying a commercial airplane is a coveted position, and it will take a good deal of time and experience to be able to do that, but with patience and determination you will get there.
If you are interested in becoming a pilot, you should talk to an aviation school about your possibilities. You will need to have a physical exam to determine if you are healthy and fit enough to fly planes. This can usually be done at the school, or with a doctor that the school recommends. But so long as you can pass this exam, you can be on your way to becoming a pilot.
